ABOUT THE CRAFT

Bandhanis of Kutch
Characterized by uplifted dots formed by tying and dyeing fabric to preset patterns, the craft of Bandhani is one of the oldest living textile crafts of Kutch. For centuries, each community adhered to specific colors and designs forming a recognizable identity for each group. Today with the changing social environment, the survival of this craft is precariously balanced, scrambling to compete with cheaper printed imitations. We believe we can play a role in the survival of these traditions through design innovation for contemporary life styles.

The Technique
The Bandhani process involves ‘pinning’ or drawing out a pattern in sequential dots on a trace sheet then piercing through each dot and transferring the pattern by passing colored powder on to the desired surface. Next line by line, tiny bits of fabric are pinched upwards, then wound tightly by fine thread and secured with a knot. Thousands of knots are then tied sequentially until the entire surface is covered with knots based on the traced design. Once the tying is complete the fabric is immersed into a dye bath. Here, the tied sections resist the dye from penetrating while the open sections get dyed. Post dying, the knots on the fabric are untied to reveal the design. Each piece a celebration of the living traditions of Kutch.

You may return most new, unopened items within 30 days of delivery for a full refund. We'll also pay the return shipping costs if the return is a result of our error (you received an incorrect or defective item, etc.) You should expect to receive your refund within four weeks of giving your package to the return shipper, however, in many cases you will receive a refund more quickly.
